01Sector

Healthcare and medical schemes

The sector where regulation, solvency and member outcomes are inseparable — and where our leadership has held executive office rather than observed from outside.

Medical schemes operate under a demanding set of obligations: a statutory solvency ratio, a regulator with wide supervisory powers, a board of trustees carrying fiduciary duty to members, and an administrator relationship that must be governed rather than assumed. Pressure in one of these areas rarely stays contained.

Our founder served Sizwe Hosmed Medical Scheme as Chief Financial Officer and then as Principal Executive Officer — its chief executive — leading the scheme through a merger and a turnaround while delivering consistent unqualified audits. That experience shapes how we approach the work: we know what the regulator asks for, what a trustee needs in a board pack to discharge their duty, and how quickly a solvency trajectory can narrow the options available.

We are equally direct about the limits of advice. Where a scheme requires an accredited administrator, an independent actuary or a licensed intermediary, those roles belong to appropriately qualified parties and we work alongside them.

Financial services and banking

Regulated balance sheets, demanding reporting cycles and a supervisory relationship that rewards preparation.

Financial services organisations carry a reporting and control burden that leaves little room for informal process. The work we are asked to do here tends to concern the quality of financial information reaching the board, the effectiveness of the control environment behind it, and the design of risk frameworks that regulators and internal audit will both accept.

Our leadership experience includes Standard Bank, which informs how we approach control design, credit and operational risk discussion, and the rhythm of regulatory reporting.

  • Management and regulatory reporting improvement
  • Enterprise risk framework design
  • Internal audit planning and execution
  • Control-effectiveness reviews
  • Governance framework and committee design
  • Board-effectiveness evaluation

Telecommunications

Capital-intensive operations, long investment horizons and performance measures that must connect to the financial plan.

Telecommunications businesses commit capital years ahead of the revenue it supports. That makes the quality of the business case, the discipline of the planning cycle and the honesty of performance reporting unusually consequential.

Our founder's executive experience includes MTN Group. We bring that understanding to planning and forecasting work, investment appraisal, cost optimisation and the performance frameworks that connect operational delivery to financial outcomes.

Typical mandates

  • Financial planning, budgeting and forecasting
  • Business-case preparation and investment appraisal
  • Cost optimisation
  • KPI and performance-management frameworks
  • Finance operating-model design
  • Strategy execution support

Public sector and development finance

Public capital deployed against a development mandate, with accountability to the fiscus and to the communities the mandate serves.

Development finance institutions and public-sector entities are measured twice: on financial sustainability and on developmental outcome. Neither can be allowed to quietly displace the other, and governance is the mechanism that keeps both in view.

Our founder's executive experience includes the Industrial Development Corporation. We work on governance frameworks, financial oversight, funding and business-case preparation, and the reporting that allows an accounting authority or board to demonstrate how public capital has been used.

Typical mandates

  • Governance framework design and assessment
  • Financial governance and internal controls
  • Funding strategy and business-case preparation
  • Enterprise risk management
  • Performance and outcome reporting
  • Audit readiness and remediation
  • Board and committee charter design

Public benefit organisations

Mission-led organisations that must satisfy donors, regulators and beneficiaries with the same set of records.

Public benefit organisations frequently carry sophisticated compliance obligations on modest administrative capacity. Section 18A status, donor conditions, statutory reporting and the expectations of a voluntary board all draw on the same small finance function.

We help organisations build administration and reporting that meets those obligations without consuming the programme budget, and we strengthen governance so that trustees and directors can discharge their duties with confidence.

Typical mandates

  • Public benefit organisation compliance
  • Section 18A compliance support
  • Financial administration and controls
  • Governance framework and board charters
  • Monitoring, evaluation and impact reporting
  • Donor and funder reporting

Community trusts, corporate foundations and funds

Money held on behalf of beneficiaries who will never attend a board meeting.

Community trusts and corporate foundations occupy a position of unusual trust. Beneficiaries are often distant from governance, trust deeds are binding and specific, and the consequences of weak administration fall on people with little recourse.

Our founder is Independent Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Dikuno Tša Sechaba Community Development Trust, a donor-funded mining-community trust, and sits on its audit committee. The firm provides independent trustee services, governance frameworks, fund oversight and disbursement governance — approached on the assumption that every disbursement may one day need to be explained to the beneficiary whose money it was.

Typical mandates

  • Trust administration and trust-deed compliance
  • Grant-fund financial administration
  • Disbursement controls and authorisation frameworks
  • Trustee appointments and fiduciary oversight
  • Monitoring, evaluation and impact reporting
  • Board and funder reporting
